Frequently Asked Questions on UG | PG

In India, undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) degree programs represent two distinct levels of education, each offering various fields of study. Undergraduate studies focus on preparing students for their future careers, while postgraduate studies offer advanced degrees, including Master’s, Doctorate, and Ph.D. qualifications.

In India, numerous universities provide UG and PG academic programs. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is regarded as one of the top engineering institutions in the country. Other universities, such as IISc Bangalore, also offer high-quality programs like MSc in Computer Science, MSc in Biotechnology, and more.

Undergraduate courses include foundational subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, among others. University offerings may include BSc in Computer Science, BA in English Literature, BA in Political Science, and more. Postgraduate courses typically include MS in Computer Science, MS in Biotechnology, and similar programs.

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate studies in India are distinct types of degrees. The key difference is that undergraduate courses do not require prior knowledge of a subject, while postgraduate studies build on existing subject knowledge.
  • Universities offer undergraduate degrees after completing 12 years of education, which is equivalent to a two-year diploma or bachelor’s degree. After passing the entrance exam, students typically spend an additional three years to earn a bachelor’s degree.
  • The curriculum for undergraduate programs can differ between universities but generally includes subjects such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology.
  • Postgraduate studies in India signify the completion of one’s academic journey and the pursuit of employment opportunities in a specific field. Most postgraduate courses are shorter in duration than undergraduate programs and are typically dual-credit, equivalent to one semester.

Undergraduate degrees are commonly referred to as Bachelor’s degree programs.

A Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree is required to enter a first-professional program at the university. The BA typically spans four years and is structured as follows:

  • First year: introductory courses, including mathematics, English, and history
  • Second year: courses in the chosen major along with electives
  • Third year: further major-specific courses or additional coursework to fulfill major requirements
  • Fourth year: comprehensive exams or a thesis/project (if applicable*)

Students can opt to complete a thesis or project in their fourth year if they choose to pursue this option. The thesis/project must receive approval from their academic dean before submission for examination. It is completed with guidance from a faculty advisor.

Undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs offer numerous opportunities to enhance your knowledge, skills, and abilities across various fields. You will be encouraged to explore options for further education, training, and professional growth.

Your course will help you develop skills in areas such as:

  • Business, accounting, management, and marketing
  • Humanities
  • Engineering
  • Health and social care
  • Law
  • Technology
  • Teaching
  • Design

The PG certification course is designed for individuals who have completed their degree and wish to advance professionally in their field. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in English, mathematics, science, and communication skills. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions assessing the candidate’s knowledge of various professional aspects.

Eligibility criteria for the PG certification course include:

  • Bachelor’s degree holders with a minimum of two years of work experience
  • Master’s degree holders with at least two years of work experience
  • Individuals with other qualifications, such as an MBA, MSc, or PhD (post-doctoral), may also be eligible if they have at least seven years of relevant work experience.

The exams for the PG Certification course are conducted in January and July each year. Eligible candidates include graduates in any discipline, as well as fourth and fifth-year students of a five-year integrated LLB program who have completed three years.
